Biography

Banele Mthenjane played for the Lions in the Pro14 Rainbow Cup SA and Golden Lions in the Currie Cup. He made his debut for the Golden Lions in Round 1 of the 2021 Currie Cup Premier Division against the Pumas.

He then joined the Toyota Cheetahs in 2023.

Making my Currie Cup debut was my most memorable moment. It was in my hometown, where I also went to school, which made it even more special.

I don’t really have a pre-game ritual, but I believe in a nice hearty meal before the match.

The Beast (Tendai Mtawarira) has been my biggest inspiration. Growing up, I’ve always looked up to him, and he inspired me to pursue my rugby career.

Carl Wegner is definitely the funniest player in our squad.

Away from rugby, I love spending time with friends and family. It’s my favorite way to unwind and relax.

My advice to young aspiring rugby players is to make sure this is really what you want to do. It doesn’t always come with rainbows and sunshine—there are ups and downs. But with hard work and faith, you will make it.

The most unusual or interesting place I’ve played rugby is a stadium in Georgia.

If I could invite three rugby legends to a braai, they would be Tendai Mtawarira and Taniela Tupou.

Yes, I can light a fire without using blitz.
