Curtly Ambrose Thomas made his professional rugby debut in 2019 for Western Province at Newlands, a moment that remains one of the most memorable in his career, fulfilling a lifelong dream growing up in Cape Town. Known for his dedication and work ethic, Curtly draws inspiration from rugby greats such as Brodie Retallick and Ruan Nortje, whose skill sets and commitment have shaped his approach to the game.
Curtly’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, with professional rugby on hold, he worked a 9–5 job while continuing to train and stay prepared. His perseverance paid off when he joined the Griffons in 2022 after an overseas opportunity fell through.
Off the field, Curtly enjoys attending church and homecell, and spending quality time with family and friends. He is known in the squad for his sense of humour, often sharing laughs with teammate Daniel Maartens. He also has a knack for unique rugby experiences, such as playing a U20 match for UWC inside a prison against inmates—a testament to his adventurous spirit.
Curtly’s advice to aspiring rugby players is simple but powerful: “Keep believing and working hard wherever you are. God has a plan just for you, and you are exactly where you are meant to be for a reason.”
When he’s not playing, Curtly dreams of hosting a braai with rugby legends Brodie Retallick, Victor Matfield, and Kurt-Lee Arendse.
