Lourens matriculated at Paarl Gymnasium and began his Varsity Cup journey at Maties, before he moved to Bloemfontein to play in the tournament for one more year.
The 24-year-old played a significant role in FNB UFS Shimlas' successful season that saw them top the Varsity Cup log for the first time. He also attracted the attention of Cheetah coach Hawies Fourie, signing a contract with the Cheetahs during the tournament.
George Lourens joined the Toyota Cheetahs on 1 May 2022 after being voted Varsity Cup Player that Rocks in 2022. He was a star performer for the Shimlas of the Free State University.
Lourens made his Currie Cup debut in the number 10-jersey on 3 June 2022 for the Toyota Cheetahs against the Pumas at the Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein, in Round 13 of the 2022 Currie Cup Premier Division.
He is part of the 2023 Currie Cup winner's squad.
