In early 2008, Robert Ebersohn had the privilege of representing South Africa in two World Cup tournaments.

As a 19-year-old SA Schools center in 2007, he first played an essential part for the Springbok sevens team. He also played a massive role in the Springboks' victory over the Kiwi's in the final of the Australian tournament on 5-6 April 2008 in Adelaide with 15-7. It was the Kiwis' first defeat in 47 international sevens matches and seven consecutive tournament wins. 

Robert was then, with his twin brother, the flyhalf Sias, also a member of the SA Under-20 team that participated in the World Cup tournament in Wales from 6 to 21 June. The Young Bokkies destroyed the USA 108-18, thrashed Scotland 72-3, and defeated Samoa 16-11 before falling to England 18-26 in the semi-finals. In the play-off for third place, the Baby Boks beat  Wales 43-18 in Swansea.

It didn't take long for Cheetah coach Naka Drotské to play Robert as the outside centre in his Currie Cup team. Ebersohn and Springbok Meyer Bosman (inside centre) was a formidable centre combination.

The four tries scored by the Cheetahs' two 19-year-olds, Robert Ebersohn (centre) and Wilton Pietersen (full-back), against the Valke at Vodacom Park on 25 July 2008, were like the headline for an exciting rugby story in writing. Ebersohn removed doubts about his ability to stand his ground even at the senior level with a standout performance, then at inside centre.

His defence, strength and pace constantly gave these East Rand visitors problems. It gave rise to the hope that the Cheetahs could once again find the necessary hitting power in the midfield.

Robert Ebersohn had his schooling at Grey College in Bloemfontein, and he was a student in General Management at the University of the Free State. He played eight-man until grade 11, but then he started playing full back. In his matric year in 2007, Robert moved to centre with his twin brother, Sias, the flyhalf on Grey, and the Free State Cravenweek team. He also excelled in athletics by winning the SA's in U.15 hurdles.

Ebersohn has no superstitions and has "only one faith, and that is in Jesus". 

His father, Tiaan, played for the Free State and Western Province centre. Robert (centre: 2008-'13; 2021-'22 – 145 games) played 37 Cheetah games in the same team as his twin brother, Sias (flyhalf: 2008-'12; 2015-'16 – 98 games) – which is the record.

Robert's sister, Annerie (100, 200, 400m), represented South Africa at the 2007 World Youth Athletics Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Robert Ebersohn has already represented the Toyota Cheetahs in 145 games (10 as captain; 23 tries).

He is part of the 2023 Currie Cup winner's squad.
