The Toyota Cheetahs’ crackerjack hooker, Louis (Chucky) van der Westhuizen, is rewriting the record books. His two tries last Saturday in the Carling Currie Cup match against the Bulls took his number of tries for the 2022 season to 15 in only 11 matches: the second-most in a Currie Cup season for the Cheetahs.

The current record holder is the wing Jan-Harm van Wyk, who scored 16 tries in the 1997 Currie Cup competition. Chucky shares second place with Philip Burger (also a wing), who scored 15 tries in the 2006 Currie Cup season.

Van der Westhuizen’s 15 Currie Cup tries this season is by far the most by a Cheetah hooker. Richardt Strauss, who from 2012 to 2016 represented Ireland in 17 tests, scored 9 tries for the Cheetahs in the 2007 Currie Cup season, which included four tries in the Currie Cup match on 31 Augustus 2007 in the Toyota Stadium against the Falcons. From 2006 to 2009, Strauss scored 17 tries in 103 matches for the Cheetahs.

Van der Westhuizen could, of course, increase his number of tries in Saturday’s semi-final against the Pumas in Bloemfontein … and if the Cheetahs win, in the Currie Cup final in the Toyota Stadium. Watch this space!

Richardt Strauss, wat tussen 2012 en 2016 in 17 toetse vir Ierland gespeel het, het in die 2007-seisoen as Cheetah-haker 9 drieë in 15 Curriebekerwedstryde gedruk. Dit het vier drieë in ‘n Curriebeker-wedstryd op 31 Augustus 2007 teen die Valke in die Toyota-stadion ingesluit. Strauss het van 2006 tot 2009 in 103 Cheetah-wedstryde 17 drieë gedruk.

Van der Westhuizen kan sy getal drieë natuurlik Saterdag in die halfeindstryd teen die Pumas verder opstoot … en as die Cheetahs wen, wag daar nog ‘n Curriebeker-eindstryd in die stadion!
