Getting to know Munster

Munster is one of the most well-known rugby clubs in the world thanks to a long history and the vast number of their players who have gone on to represent Ireland and the British & Irish Lions.
The club is one of four Irish provinces which compete in the Guinness PRO14, lifting the trophy on no fewer than three separate occasions in 2003, 2009 and 2011.
They finished top of the league last season with an impressive 19 wins from their 22 games, but defeat to Scarlets in the final denied them a fourth crown.

History
Munster were formed in 1879 and played their first game at Thomond Park – now considered a fortress ground – in 1938 with victory over arch-rivals Leinster.
In 1978 they recorded one of their most famous victories with a 12-0 success over New Zealand in front of a packed Thomond Park.

It was third-time lucky for Munster as they finally lifted the European trophy in 2006 at the Principality Stadium and repeated the trick, at the same ground, in 2008.
Having won their first league title in 2003, they would be crowned league champions again in 2009 before defeating Leinster in the showpiece final in 2011.
The club was rocked last year by the death of their head coach Anthony Foley in Paris prior to a European Champions Cup match at the age of just 42.
A hugely popular figure throughout the rugby world, the squad came together during the tragic period and eventually reached the final of the league having finished top during the regular season.

Thomond Park in Limerick is the spiritual home of Munster and it is not often that the capacity 25,600 crowd see a home defeat.

The ground was redeveloped recently and was re-opened with a Munster match against the All Blacks in 2008, and a victory over Australia followed that in 2010.
Munster also play occasional home games at Irish Independent Park in Cork.

Historic rivalries:
Munster’s fiercest rivals are Leinster, with the two provinces regularly battling it out at the top of the league table.
Leinster have lifted the league trophy four times, once more than Munster, and have enjoyed success in Europe too, like their near-neighbours.
The two teams meeting on the field is always a spectacle and one that is not to be missed.
