Free State Rugby went through a challenging year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the decision to omit the Toyota Cheetahs from the expanded PRO16 competition: a decision which resulted in many top players not renewing their contracts. 

While it is a pity that we are going to lose stalwarts like Reniel Hugo, Rhyno Smith and Carl Wegner, we are thankful that the Toyota Cheetahs will retain most of its players. Fortunately, Carl and Rhyno will also still be part of the Cheetahs group until the end of the Franchise Cup.  Free State Rugby is working hard to fill the gaps left by these players and to strengthen the depth with the contracting of new players. 

The era ahead of us holds exciting new opportunities for growth. Although matches will still be played in empty stadiums in the foreseeable future, statistics show that the Toyota Cheetahs have achieved impressive growth in terms of commercial exposure. We are confident that the Toyota Cheetahs will remain a force in South African rugby.

Die Toyota Cheetahs sal ‘n krag bly in SA rugby

Die tydperk waardeur Vrystaat Rugby die afgelope jaar gegaan het, was uiters uitdagend as gevolg van die Covid-19 pandemie, asook die besluit om die Toyota Cheetahs uit die vergrote PRO16-kompetisie te laat. Een van die uitvloeisels van laasgenoemde besluit was dat verskeie spelers nie hul kontrakte hernu het nie. 

Die Toyota Cheetahs is jammer om staatmakers soos Reniel Hugo, Rhyno Smith en Carl Wegner te verloor.  Gelukkig sal Carl en Rhyno nog tot die einde van die Franchise Cup deel van die Cheetah groep wees. Ons is nietemin dankbaar dat die Toyota Cheetahs die grootste deel van sy groep spelers behou het. Vrystaat Rugby werk hard daaraan om die leemtes wat hierdie spelers gaan laat, te vul en om ons diepte te versterk met die kontraktering van nuwe spelers.   

 Die tydperk wat voorlê, hou opwindende geleenthede in vir groei. Hoewel wedstryde in die afsienbare toekoms steeds in geslote stadions gespeel sal word, wys statistiek dat die Toyota Cheetahs indrukwekkende groei getoon het in terme van kommersiële blootstelling. Ons is vol vertroue dat die Toyota Cheetahs ‘n krag sal bly in Suid-Afrikaanse rugby.
