Free State Challenge Cup Final Set for Blockbuster Bloemfontein Derby

The Free State Rugby Union (FSRU) is proud to announce an electrifying final of the Free State Challenge Cup following an action-packed semi-final weekend that showcased the very best of club rugby in the province.

In Aliwal North, Collegians delivered an impressive performance to defeat Aliwal Buffels 61–47 in a thrilling, high-scoring encounter that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. The match was a true testament to the competitive spirit and attacking flair that defines Free State club rugby.

Meanwhile, in Bloemfontein, Bloemfontein Police secured a commanding 52–11 victory over Free State Agriculture College, underlining their strength and intent as they booked their place in the final in dominant fashion.

These results set the stage for a highly anticipated final between two of Bloemfontein’s most storied and long-standing rivals, Bloemfontein Police and Bloemfontein Collegians. The derby clash promises to be a fiercely contested battle, fueled by pride, history, and the pursuit of Challenge Cup glory.

The final will take place this coming Friday evening at Steyners Rugby Club, Pres Steyn High School in Bloemfontein. Supporters can expect a showcase of top-quality rugby, as both teams look to cement their place as champions of the Free State Challenge Cup.

Free State Rugby Union President, Coenraad Klopper, emphasised the significance of the occasion and the progress made through the competition: “The quality of rugby displayed in the semi-finals reflects the strength and depth of our club structures. This final is more than just a match; it is a celebration of Free State club rugby, its rivalries, and its communities. We are proud of what has been achieved through the Challenge Cup and are confident that this final will be a fitting showcase of the passion and talent within our province.”

This fixture not only represents the culmination of a successful tournament but also highlights the revival of club rugby within the province bringing communities together and reigniting the passion that lies at the heart of the game.
