The coaches Sakkie van Zyl and Nelie Smith with a proud Wouter Hugo, captain of the Free State team which won the Currie Cup in 1976: the first time in 80 years. It took almost 30 years for the Free State Cheetahs to win the coveted trophy a second time, immediately followed by a third and fourth time!
Read more about the union’s Currie Cup story in the book Cheetahland: 125 Jaar se Lief en Leed, which will be for sale by mid-year. The book, written by Mr Statistics, Frikkie van Rensburg, and published (initially in Afrikaans) by Free State Cheetahs (Pty) Ltd, will cost about R400.
Only 1 000 copies will be printed, so it is important to put your name on the waiting list by sending an email to media@fsrugby.co.za.
