No team gave Free State supporters more pleasure in the quarter of a century since the Free State Stadium was inaugurated in 1955, than Transvaal (as the Golden Lions were known in those days).
Year after year a star-studded Transvaal team travelled to Bloemfontein, convinced of an easy victory against their underrated opponents, only to be sent back to Johannesburg with their tail between their legs.
It took Transvaal the best of 28 years to beat Free State on their home ground. Transvaal’s first win was on 30 April 1983, after which they lost another five times before recording their second victory on 26 June 1986.
These are some of the delightful statistics that will be found in the book Cheetahland: 125 Jaar se Lief en Leed which will be available by mid-year.
The book, written by Frikkie van Rensburg and published by Free State Cheetahs (Pty) Ltd, will cost about R450. Only 1 000 copies will be printed (initially only in Afrikaans), so it is important to mail your name, the number of books you want to order and your contact details as soon as possible to firstname.lastname@example.org.
