Abongile Nonkontwana is a versatile loose-forward who is equally comfortable on the side or the back of the scrum. Furthermore, the big ball-carrying player, who is also rock-solid at defence, has the ability to play in the second-row if need be and he adds options at line-out time.
Nonkontwana, who hails from the Eastern Cape, represented the South African Schools teams and also went on to play in the World Rugby U20 Championships for the Junior Springboks.
Since his arrival at the Cheetahs from the Bulls, he has established himself as regular in the Currie Cup team. He also got his first taste of Guinness Pro14 rugby when he was flown over to Scotland as a replacement ahead of the fixture against Edinburgh at Murrayfield.
After joining the Cheetahs as a loan-player, he was bumped up to a full contract following a string of impressive performances.
Nonkontwane has been a start performer for the Cheetahs in the Pro14, and he try he helped create with fancy football skills against Scarlets is tipped at as firm favourite for the try of the season.
